![]() PlayStation and VR gamers alike are looking forward to PSVR 2’s launch, which many insiders anticipate to be coming later this year. The new PSVR 2 headset may not be released until Sony resolves its PS5 stock shortage, considering PSVR 2’s dependence on a wired connection to the next-gen PlayStation 5 console. However, given supply chain and stock shortage issues PlayStation has been experiencing, it wouldn’t be surprising if the launch was towards the latter end of the year or pushed back altogether to 2023. As Sony started the new year releasing more information about PSVR 2 at CES 2022, it’s likely that a 2022 launch date is in the works. In addition to the PSVR 2 price remaining a mystery, for now, Sony has not yet revealed the headset’s launch date. Due to the specs of the PSVR 2, notably the 2000×2040 resolution OLED display for each eye which offers a higher resolution than the Oculus Quest 2, a price point higher than the original PlayStation VR’s $399 isn’t out of the question, as most devices with OLED display have a price premium. Those interested in buying a PSVR 2 will also need to purchase a PS5, a task easier said than done due to supply chain issues and worldwide stock shortages PlayStation is working to address. While the Quest 2 has lower specs than the PSVR 2, such as an LCD rather than OLED, gamers who don’t own a PlayStation 5 already can purchase the standalone headset and begin enjoying VR right away. PSVR 2 will likely have a much broader range of titles, including console-quality AAA games, but as it relies on buyers having a PlayStation 5 next-gen console, the content offering may be largely limited to PlayStation exclusive titles. ![]() ![]() At the time of its launch, PlayStation VR was considered overpriced by many due to its limited content library. Despite coming out six years ago, PSVR bundles are currently hard to come by and will set buyers back around $299-$350, if they’re able to find them in stock. PlayStation VR2 proves VR isn't the future of gaming because limiting the technology to gaming exclusively through the use of a specific console wastes the power and potential a VR headset truly has.Unfortunately, one thing Sony didn’t answer at CES 2022 is arguably the most asked question about PSVR 2: how much will it cost? PlayStation VR retailed for $399 at launch in 2016, so the PlayStation VR2 will likely clock in around the same amount. Those suffering from stress or anxiety can even step outside the real world and get an immersive meditation experience to help them regroup and focus on their mental well-being. Filmmakers and other artists have used VR to offer a new perspective on older works, breathing new life into pieces of media. With that being said, VR has done wonders for medical training and education, giving curious minds an avenue into hands-on training. ![]() VR is so much more than a magic trick, and game controllers have long been a player's extension into any virtual world experience. ![]() Since the 80s, VR has been a symbol of future tech in books, movies, and TV as users are depicted as truly inhabiting these different VR worlds, but that doesn't line up with the reality of the modern world. More than anything, VR needs to stop being relegated as a gaming-only peripheral and start being treated as the revolutionary piece of technology it actually is. This is why many VR titles were initially add-ons to existing games or reworks of established titles meant to hop on the VR trend. Even including the most basic VR functionality requires time and resources that could be deemed more useful in another aspect of development. ![]()
